"Gondola of Borneo"

Found this photo in the collection, taken somewhere between Pontianak and Banjar Masin, back in December 2005, at a very unsettling weather period of the year, who would have thought those 2 boats will bear the weight of 2 cars, without displacement problem. People around this part of Borneo improvised a lot when it comes to transportation. Care to try this in light of the recent Temburong flood?

Not quite what I have in mind, badly taken with my trusty canon ixus. Nice little screens aren't they? Mind boggling information are displayed on these Multi Function Display, too much information being display at a time, being a danger of being missed and worst being ignored during high workload conditions-CRM issues eh. Welcome to my little "office". Why are these technology called "glass-cockpit" when most of them are not even made of one (with exception of the standbys). And why do airlines jockey have fewer button to play with?? which I like.

I know the car is the spoiler, not the spoiler on the car...this was taken near the Sawarak/Kalimantan,Indonesia border of Entikong, a large signboard of advert for Mentari, the mobile service provider. This was on the trip to Banjar Masin which took 5 days one way due to the dirt road/track accessible only by 4x4. See the small "V" sign?

Another view of the Merimbun Lake, I wish I could cross to the other side (not shown) which offer a lot of breathtaking view, flora and fauna, there is only one way i.e by boat (I fear the crocs) or there is another way, wait till the lake run dry in the drought season...I don't think so.

This is what I do when I get bored driving to/from work which normally takes about 45minutes each way. The live view in the camera is very useful when used with the side-mirror, this gives new meaning to the word 'drive-by shooting'.

Ever think of our life-counter we call age, since we don't know when we are going to leave this life, the counters should be in second or milliseconds even. We always counts the years we pass by with cherish or regrets, why not cherish the remaining time Allah S.W.T has given us with prayer,hope and determination to do good. Just remember time will be never be on our side and will never waits.

Sunset in Florida

The day before

I took this photo from the apartment's balcony in West Palm Beach March last year a day before we left for Brunei. Glorious summer as it turn out, it was chilly and the grass were greener when we arrive here 7 weeks before. I could see the whole golf course with it sands and gravel traps from here, I spent most of the evening enjoying this view. Glad to be there.

I can't believe 2007 gone like a breeze, not much activity for me yet because I've been ill for a year now....since last year...even the fireworks display at JP and Empire failed to get me going,
its the flu bug with usual consequences like cold, cough, sneeze and splitting headache. Anyway enough of the story of my life...hope I'm well tomorrow, insyaAllah...or should I get an MC..hmm that's an idea...Arghhh first day of work in 2008!

The moon on a boxing day, witnessing 3 years after the great Tsunami, I got the figure wrong when I said over 100,000 killed, its more like 200,000 all over Asia (100,000 in Indonesia alone). May Allah have mercy on their souls and forgive us for our sins. Amin

Simpur.bn

The Simpur

The Simpur, found mainly in the interior, growing wildly among other vegetation, highly distinctive leaves, fruits and flowers. The leaves are used to wrap the local food 'tapai', or can be use to wrap fishes and meat (pais ikan or daging), they make a very good disposable plate as well. It bear the fruit first which then bloomed to flowers. According to the old folks the fruits are eaten by the mousedeer (pelanduk) as one of their favourite, so during this rainy season and flooding, "pelanduk" will be out and about searching for these. It is common that, this time of the year is quite popular with the hunters.

On the second pictures above, the owner started to put up all sorts of coloured props (act something like a scarecrow, to scare the sparrow away).This suggest that the padi grain is appearing and attracting the birds. Another 2-3 more months the padi will be ready to be sown (mengatam padi).

Do you know that padi can be popped (puffed)? like a popcorn.

Falkland in December

Bell "Falkland Crest" and Thimbles.

It is the middle of summer in the Falkland now, with sunny weather occasionally thunderstorm, and even hail storm as big as the golf balls falling from the sky. Very windy place since the east of the islands is an open Atlantic ocean, and of course down south across the Scotia sea where the Atlantic and Pacific meets is the South pole (Antartica). Wind is at least 20 knots and gusty, even if the outside temperature shows a nice +15 C, the windchill factors will surely chilled you to the bones. Above are some gentle reminder, plenty of sheeps, penguins, sealions and landmines...and plenty more.

Memory of Falkland Is. (Islas Malvinas)

The "A-4 Alley"

The famous A-4 alley in the eastern island of Falkland, where the Argentinian Air-Force A-4 Skyhawk pilots used to fly low behind these ridge before attacking the British forces inflicting heavy loses on the Britons during the Falkland war in 1982. I was posted to the Falkland Is. 3 years ago after finishing my cross-posting in the UK, I have a very fond memory of the place and the people I worked with over there. I will never forget the boxing day that year 2003, when the great Tsunami killed over 100,000 people all over Asia.

Tree Sparrow

"Pipit"

Tree sparrow locally known as burong Pipit, considered as pest by local padi planters, very agile little bird, about 140 species known to exist, very subtle differences between them. Here in Brunei, there are 2 known (non-specifically) by the locals as pipit Padi (black in colour- very rarely seen) and the one above which is also known as pipt Labuan.

Season's Greetings from NBT (BRUNEI) SDN BHD "Dec 2006"

Probably most of you remember this one very well last year, if my memory serve me well, some crazy sailors from Oz (3 to be exact) managed to vandalise some of these beautiful and colourful display. They were slapped with a fine though, I wish they got a tougher penalty like a slap in the face. I missed the Hari Raya's Greetings this year, hoping to catch the next display soon.Is it up yet?

Landmark

The Nation's Pride

No matter how many time we look at this landmark, we have to admit that it is one beautiful architectural wonder. My shot supposed to mimick the "pinhole camera" effect, but not good enough, should have been more blurred I think. I saw banners with the picture of the SOAS mosque at Jeddah International airport during my Umrah trip, not sure what the ads was all about, but it make me feel proud. Lost the shooting information on this one though.

I like this shot, I don't know why exactly, tightly cropped using telephoto lens set at 300mm. It was closed to public, I really want to know what this place is. May be that nagging question one of the reason why I like this shot.

23 Zulkaedah 1428

MOON

I saw this after the Fajr prayer this morning, beautiful and bright 1/2 moon (not quite crescent yet) of 23rd day of the Muslim month of Zulkaedah, the moon will get darker toward the end of the month. Surprisingly this morning it was a clear sky for a change.Its been Hazy for this past week.I took about 17 shots, and this is my last one, got lucky. Make sure your lens is clear of mist when you start shooting especially in the morning.
